Discussion 3: There’s no way I’d live in a…

Hi guys!! I hope you enjoyed your day off yesterday. I know I did!! Yesterday I went to cooking school with my friends, and then in the evening I practiced my cooking skills some more by cooking “tamago-yaki” and “grilled sesame seed coated salmon with white miso sauce”. It was delicious!!

Anyway, let’s get down to business. In this week’s discussion I’d like you to talk about the types of living situations you don’t mind, and those you definitely can’t stand (page 16 of your class handout). In particular, I’d like you to practice your “agreeing and disagreeing” phrases, so please try to respond to as many comments as possible! I’m looking forward to hearing your opinions.

To get started, here are some of my ideas:

2. I don’t want to live in a neighbourhood that has a crime problem. I know that a lot of cities have crime issues these days… but I’d definitely like to avoid living in a “rough neighbourhood”. I don’t want to be afraid to walk alone at night.

3. Personally, I don’t care if my house as a lot of bad Feng Shui, as I don’t really believe in stuff like that.

6. I would definitely try to avoid living in an area that has rare poisonous spiders!! Where I’m from in Australia there are so many poisonous spiders, and I hate them. They freak me out so much!!! They’re everywhere!! For example, one time my family and I were having a BBQ in our patio, and my younger brother was drinking a glass of milk. He was about to talk a gulp of it when he found a BIG black spider inside it!!! Can you believe it?? It must have fallen from the ceiling straight into his cup. Anyway, it freaked me out so much. So, I’d definitely avoid moving into an area that had a poisonous spider population.

Anyway, that’s enough from me. Let’s hear what you have to say. Start blogging!!

Kris

Hi kris,

I think you are a good cook. In Australia, what do you eat often??

I feel easy about your brother escaping the spider.I definitely don't want to live the house raring poisonous spiders. In my house, a big spiders rare sometimes. they aren't poisonous spiders, but I feel scary even them. If I met poisonouse spiders and was bited by them, I might die!! It is too dangerous!! Living a house raring no spiders is big deal.

Hi,

I'm with you on No6, Kris. There are many insects in Okinawa such as spider and cockroach. When I go to my grandpa's house, I see big spiders every time. When I was child, my brother often caught them and threw to me. Because of this, I don't like insects!!
So I don't want to live in the place that has a poisonous spider population either.

Hi Kris,

I'm with you on that case because I hate not only spiders but also insects. They makes me unpleasant. When I met them, I shouted. So, my parents were often in trouble. I think that people which have spiders or insects as a pet are crazy! They are vermin for me! So, I definitely don't want to live in a place with poisonous spiders.

I hope you have a nice holiday!
Thank you for reading my comment.

Hi kris,
I agree with Mika,Yuji,Yui and you.
I don't like spiders, insect and worms, too because I feel sick at the sight of them. When I find them,
I frighten and shout.
Anyway,When I was a child, cockroach walked on the wall in my house and droped on my head!! So, this is my shocking thing and trauma.
Therefore,I definitely don't want to live with rare poisonius spiders!!

Dear Mika

Because Australia is a multicultural country, there is no real "Australian" food (although there are several traditional Australian deserts and cakes... although a lot of them have British origins). So, each family eats totally different food. But, a kind of "typical" Australian meal is "meat and three vegs"... which means on one plate you have some kind of meat, and three types of vegetables, typically frozen vegetables like peas, corn and beans, and often mashed potato too (in summer this changes to a salad). In Australia it is most common to only use one plate for meals... unlike in Japan where we often have our bowl for rice and then several different "okazu" to choose from. But because I didn't eat meat in Australia I'd often just have salad, or vegetable pasta or vege and noodle stirfry or something. My favorite foods that I miss from Australia are all kinds of meditaranian foods (greek, lebanese, turkish) such as hummus, felafel, pita bread, tabboulea, olives, kabab, etc. Yum!!!

Dear Yuji,

I can't believe that your brother threw spiders at you!! That's crazy. In Japan I often see people picking up spiders with their bare hands... but that freaks me out.

By the way... are spiders in Okinawa poisonous??

Dear Yui,

"I think that people which have spiders or insects as a pet are crazy!"

I'm totally with you on that!! I personally can't understand why someone would want to keep a poisonous and dangerous creature as a pet. Although, I think some insects may be acceptable, like beetles or something. Let's stay away from such crazy people!!!

I hope you have a good extra long weekend too!!

Dear Ayaka,

"Anyway,When I was a child, cockroach walked on the wall in my house and droped on my head!!"

I can't believe that!! That must have been very scary/disgusting for you!!! Actually, personally, I can kind of handle cockroaches, thanks to my year 6 teacher, Mr Statham. For some crazy reason he made us do experiments with cockroaches, for example rubbing honey on them and strange stuff like that. And he also made us collect cockroaches from our houses and bring them to school... how crazy is that!!

I hope you don't have any more encounters with cockroaches!!!

Hi kris,
I hate spiders and insects too. But I think I can't stand if my ex-boyfriend lives on the same floor rather than if I live in the area where there are rare poisonous spiders. This is the recent event, my ex-boyfriend came to my restaurant(which I work as a part-time). I was very surprised and felt like to come back to my house. I didn't pretend to notice, but he did!! I thought of this as just another job, but I never want to see him!!!! So if my ex-boyfriend lived on the floor, I would decide to move other house.

Hi Kris,

I agree with Kris's opinion which is No6, because I hate spiders, too. I hate their movement. I hate their color, especially brown. I hate length of their feet. If I say that their disagreeable points, there will be no end to it. I hope they will be extinct as soon as possible.
Anyway, I hate spiders but I don't fear cockroaches so much. I can exterminate them without insecticide sprayers.

Hi everyone!

Kris, your story about your brother and a spider gave me the creeps. I never want to imagin it!

Anyway about myself.
6. I think living where there'er a lot of earthquakes is a big deal. Where I'm from, in Kochi, it is said that people will have a very big earthquake in early thirty years. They also say that the quake will continue for more than one hundred seconds and there is a big Tsunami. I'm worried about my family who live in Kochi.

They won't move there, but if so, they and I are sure to move where there is no fault line.

ryuji さんのコメント...

Me neither!! I don't like spiders. And I can't believe this story but it's so funny. If I found a BIG spider inside something to drink, I would die from heart attack. So I think your brother has a strong heart!
Anyway, I want to eat your tamagoyaki. You will be a nice wife, I think. I hope!! You'll be!! hihihi

I can't believe your hometown has poizonous spiders so ordinary. It's very very scary!!
I hate insects, too!

But, when I lived with my famiry, if insects come forward and I screamed, nobody help me...

So I can get rid of them, but I don't want to do.

Hi, Kris.
I really agree with No6 because I hate the most in the world is spiders. They look so strange and scary.I can't understand why they exist.I strongly hope that they will die out.Even if spiders are poisonous or not,I can't stand living with them.
But I love spider man!!Do you know spider man?He is our Hero.

Thanks for your comments guys.

Tomoe - Ohh... that sounds like a really painful experience! I hope he doesn't visit your restaurant again!!

Fumiko - I think you must have spiders more than me!! I too would like to see them extinct... but I worry about what would happen to the number of insects and bugs (like mosquitoes and flies) if we had no spiders...

Hiroko - Yes, I agree with you too. I'd hate to live on a fault line. Fingers crossed that there are no earthquakes or tsunamis near your hometown for several hundred years to come!

Ryuji - Ha ha ha... good point!!!! I'll have to make you guys some "tamagoyaki" or something some day!! But please don't have a heart attack when you eat it!!

Midori - Maybe your family is more scared of spiders and insects than you are!!!

Yuki - Ha ha ha... but have you seen spider man 3... what do you think of the "black" spider man?? Yeah, spiders are a weird freak of nature!! Let's hope they die out some day soon.

Cheers,
Kris
