Discussion 4: To quit or not to quit…

Hi guys. Did you enjoy your (extra) long weekend?? I didn’t get up to much. On Saturday I went to Karato and saw the “fune-gassen”. If you’ve never seen it before, I recommend that you watch from afar. It looks much more impressive if you see it from a distance. And after that I went to the new Indian Curry restaurant (Nandan?) in Karato. It is actually run by a Nepalese or Indian man, and all of the staff are Nepalese/Indian. It is really authentic… and the Nan is huge!! No joke!! I recommend that you try it out… especially at lunch time because they have a very good value lunch menu!! Anyway, I hope you all had a fun and relaxing break!! If only it was a bit longer…!!!

Okay, today’s discussion topic. What did you think about today’s story… about Soon quitting her job after only 1 year because she didn’t find it challenging enough? Do you agree with her decision? What would you have done if you were in her shoes? Would you have quit, or put up with it? Do you think that people should stay with the same company for their whole lives, or do you think it is quite normal, and perhaps a good thing, for people to change jobs several times during their lives?

Personally, I think it must be a difficult decision to quit your job, because without a full time job one can become very financially vulnerable. However, I also believe that it is important for one to find some sort of fulfillment through their work. We spend so many years of our lives working… so I believe we should do something which we enjoy or find challenging, and that totally uses our skills. Of course all jobs have some boring or tiresome points to them… but a job that offers no challenge at all must be very frustrating, especially for someone who really wants to be put to the test and challenged.

Anyway, let’s hear your opinions!!!

Kris

Hi Kris, did you go to "Sentei-sai"? I went to it, too and saw "joro-dotyu". It was so beautiful.

It's difficult to comment about this topic. According to my own experience, as I said in the last class, if she quit her work wthiout any purpose, she'll not be able to find what she really want to do after all. But this is in my case. I think it depends on one's personarity.

Hi Hiroko,

I saw the "Sentei-sai" last year, so this year I went and saw the "fune gasen". I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Yes, you make a good point. It really comes down to the individual in regard to these kinds of decisions. But, I do agree that there are many potential problems associated with quitting your job without having some kind of plan for what you want to do. Although some people do argue that it is difficult to decide what one wants to do simply because they have no time to investigate while still working fulltime. But, I agree that it is better if they do.

Cheers,
Kris

Hi Kris,
I think today's discussion topic is too difficult to answer...
I agree with her decision because if I were her,I would quite a job, too. But,almost of jobs are very hard and We would sometimes get stress form wolking. However, suppose we would get iliness which look like melancholy by stress form wolking, what would you do? It's not good for health!!

Good morning Kris,
It's too difficult for me to answer the question.I think that to quit her job is a bit early.
If she puts up with her work patiently, she might be given the work which is a more challenging and responsible.Even if she quit working and take the new job,she won't be able to get an ideal one
easily.
Anyway,it depends on her.I think its the best way to do as she likes it.
By the way,Nan is so delicious, isn't it?I love it.

Hi there,

I agree with Soon's decision. Because it's a waste of time to do what you aren't interested. So Soon did a right thing, I guess. But she didn't decide what job she would do next. I think she shoud have quit after she found something she wanted to do.

Hi, Kris,

I think Soon's decision is good, because I don't want to get a job which doesn't suit me. When I live, the job is very important. I hope to get a worthwhile job for me. But, I don't quit a job for a reason to be unpleasant, because I can feel that any kind of job is very hard. So, I agree to her decision except a part.

Thank you for reading my comment.

Hi everyone,

I don't agree with her dicision, because I think it is so speedy that she guit her job. If she quit her present job and she will be able to new job, she will quit new job soon. I think she should learn to endure. It is wishful thinking that she can get responsibility only one year. If she want to more responsibility and challenge, she should show her enthusiasm, then her boss may give her challenge.
That's why I don't agree with her dicision.

Hi kris,

I agree with Soon's decision. I think she will quite her job sooner or later. If she cotinued her job, it is just a waste of time. She has many choices to do next because she is young and can start over again. So she should think what she really wants to do in her own pace.

HI kris,
you'r experience is great!! I have not ever seen "fune-gassen". Actualy, I don't know what is found in shimonoseki well. I try to go to see "fune-gassen" and to eat the big nan in Nandan!!

Anyway, I am with soon's decision. Our life is long so we should try to work some jobs and to observe ourself from some angles. However, I think we should try to find points challenging in every jobs. It isn't good for us to quit our's job if we become idle and have no some goals.

Thanks for your great comments. I agree, this kind of question can be difficult to answer, because it really depends on each individual. But, I think it’s important to at least think about. Here’s a summary of everyone’s ideas:

Agree:
Ayaka, Yuji, Tomoe and Mika agree with Soon’s decision. Ayaka made the good point that we can become stressed, depressed and become ill if we work in a job that we really don’t like. Both Yuji and Tomoe said that it would be a waste of time for Soon to continue in a job she’s not happy with. She’s young, so she has many more chances to find the job for her. Mika made a similar point, that Soon should take the opportunity to try a variety of jobs, but she also made the point that its important for us to find some kind of challenge in every job we do.

Disagree:
Yuki and Eriko disagreed with Soon’s decision. Both of them said that it was too soon for her to quit her job, and that it takes time to be given greater responsibility at work. Yuki also made the point that it’s difficult to find the ideal job, so even if she changes jobs she mightn’t be able to find the perfect job.

Partly Dis/Agree:
Yui and Hiroko partly agreed with Soon. Yui agrees that it wouldn’t be nice to continue working in a position that doesn’t suit oneself, but she admits that all jobs have unpleasant points, which we may have to put up with. Hiroko agreed with Yuji’s point that it’s important to have some idea or plan about exactly want we want to do before actually quitting.

I guess in the end, it all falls down to people’s individual situations and values. Let’s all hope that we are happy in our future jobs!!

Kris

Hi Kris.

I'm sorry for late to write comment.
Actually, I don't agree with Soon's decision, because I think it's too early that she quits her job. I have a part time job and I have worked there for a year. I had wanted to quite my part time job many times. However, I acclimated myself to a place to work and contents of job bit by bit. Furthermore, I have many friends and seniors. Therefore, I think it's better for her to continue the work.
